Board of Directors

Maxie Carpenter, Chair

“I was profoundly influenced by the difficulty of my Father’s passing in 1996.  I was invited to participate as a corporate volunteer in 2003, and was just as profoundly influenced by how much dignity and comfort Circle of Life brings to the passing of loved ones and to their families.  I’m here because all deserve the same or better quality of care and support in passing as they do in living.”

Euva Phillips, Vice-Chair

"Why do I volunteer at Circle of Life Hospice?  It’s the opportunity to give individuals a chance to really “live” those last few weeks/days of life.   Many years ago my mother suffered the last few months of her life as her body succumbed to debilitating diabetes.  She had lived through many years of insulin, dialysis, seven amputations, loss of eyesight and much more.  Although the nurses in the hospital did a great job, they were there to help people get well, they were not trained to help people live through the end of life.  A few years later I had my first experience with COL Hospice as a friend’s mother was brought to the Hospice Home.  I saw the love, the care and the genuine concern to make those last few weeks become consoling and comfortable for the patient and her family.  I cried later as I wished that my mom & my family could have experienced such amazing care and compassion.  Just to have a small part of bringing that to others is simply amazing and truly an honor.  And, it has become a passion.  It is a desire to share this amazing experience with as many as possible!"

Jim Blount, Secretary/Treasurer

"Nothing is more precious than life. Circle of Life Hospice completes that circle. I am very honored and humbled to be part of such an awesome organization."

"During my life, I have been blessed by the shade of many trees that others have planted. In return, it is my responsibility to plant more trees."

"My mother passed away in a palliative care ward in a hospital – little caring and barely attending to her comfort in a very dull, drab and rundown former hospital. As an example of their lack of patient and family focus, we had to wait five hours after her passing for a physician to arrive on site to sign her death certificate! Then I discovered Circle of Life – an organization that weaves professionalism with sincere caring, not only for the patient, but for the whole family; to not merely “comfort” the patient, but to encourage bonding and personal self awareness for the entire family; a true focus on the reality of end of life that inspires respect and dignity. I serve on this board to bring awareness of this great organization to the community."

Cynthia Coughlin

"I am involved with Circle of Life Hospice because I have witnessed both the quality end of life care provided by the compassionate staff and the dedication of the Board of Directors to insure the sustainability of the organization."

"Serving on the COL Board has been a rewarding experience for me. Having used Hospice I knew what a great job they did, but really becoming involved has been awesome. The other Board Members and the staff are wonderful. Each month I see what has been accomplished and I am proud to be a small part of it and know that it only gets better."

"I came to know of COL in 2007, when my father received services at home, before he passed away. The service and compassion shown to our family blew me away, so I applied to become a board member, as well as a volunteer for a short time. In 2010 my mother spent her last days at the COL Hospice Home, and the sincerity and caring nature of every staff member we came in contact with was incredible. My family and I could not have dreamed of a more optimal atmosphere to spend our final days with my mom. Therefore, I am immensely passionate about the mission and the services provided, and will very proudly continue to serve on the board of directors as long as I can."
