Who Pays for Hospice Care?

The Medicare Hospice Benefit is covered under Medicare Part A. This benefit covers all aspects of hospice care with little to none out-of-pocket expense to the family.

How do I know if I am eligible for the Medicare Hospice Benefit?
Following is a list of conditions that you must meet in order to be eligible:

• You are eligible for Medicare Part A, and
• Your doctor and the hospice medical director have both certified that you have a life-limiting illness and if the disease runs it normal course, death could be expected in six months or less, and
• You sign an election of benefits form with the hospice stating you choose hospice care instead of routine Medicare covered benefits for your illness*, and
• You receive care from a Medicare-approved hospice program.
